Del Mar - Open Homes
Del Mar is a luxury community located just 18.5 miles from downtown Santa Fe. A premier seaside community, it is renowned for its thoroughbred horse club and beautiful beaches. One of the smallest cities in California, its name comes from the Spanish term for ‘by the sea’. Originally a little known seaside village, it became famous during the golden age of Hollywood, when actors like Bing Crosby turned it into a playground for the rich and famous. Today, Del Mar is a prime beachfront retreat for many people and also attracts people looking for seaside homes with spectacular ocean views.
Del Mar was incorporated in 1959, and is the smallest municipality in San Diego. Roughly 4500 people call Del Mar home, with residential homes being found on just 2.5 square miles of beach front. Del Mar attracts thousands of surfers and beach bathers to its beautiful beaches and thanks to the lobbying activities of the ‘friends of Del Mar’, which restricted the construction of high rise buildings, retains a small town atmosphere.
Housing in Del Mar consists primarily of single family homes, with a limited number of semi detached units, apartments and condominiums available for those who might not be able to afford the price of the former. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Torrey Pines State Preserve, it is considered a prime location and is primarily a residential location.
Shopping and recreational facilities abound in Del Mar, and can mainly be found along the Carmel Valley Road. Top recreational facilities include: the racing track at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Crest Canyon Open Space Park, Dog Beach and the Del Mar Fairgrounds. There are also a number of restaurants to be found on the Del Mar heights road.
Del Mar is part of the Del Mar Union School District which includes the Del Mar Heights and Del Mar Hills Elementary schools as well as the Carmel Valley Middle School. There are also a number of private schools serving the area.
Del Mar is a great place to live for anyone looking for beautiful surroundings, a small town feel, amazing weather, excellent dining facilities and spectacular ocean views. It is also close to downtown San Diego with an easy commute for those who have to work in the larger city. A good school system and numerous recreational facilities make it ideal for raising a family, while temperate all year round weather will appeal to those who like to spend the majority of their time outdoors.
